By a very special request, our throw back song is from the very old VIP, made up of Promzy (Now Promzy Afrika), Prodigal, Lazy (Now Zeal) and Friction! All along, I have been getting the title of this song wrong! We kept saying “Show Me Wossop” which was really not the title. I cant believe I have been singing this wrong for over a decade!! LOL This song is called “Kuzo Muyi Wassa” which I dont know what it means; but its in the Hausa language.

What is a party when this song is not on rotation? A party without this song is definitely a church party. I remember there was a dance that came with it!! VIP ruled the music scene those days with their energy, the drive, the uniqueness and lots more. When VIP is on stage, its always fireworks!! Its a street thing!!! Our throwback song usually comes on Thursdays; but by a special request from a very loyal fan, we bring you a song from Da Hammer’s maiden compilation album dubbed “Sounds Of Our Time” and this song happens to be the 8th track on that compilation featuring Okra and Motia titled “The Workshop”.

Even though this song is classified as Hip-Life, the Hip-Hop elements dominated the song showing more of lyrics than the rhythm of the heavy loaded beat produced by Da Hammer. Mantse a.k.a. The Signature did say at the beginning of the song that, this is one of Hammer’s all time favourite and I guess we all know why… Lyrical dexterity at its highest peak! Enjoy and share!

Today’s throw back music comes from one of Ghana’s best lyricist back in the days. None other by Mr. Originaaaal; Lord Kenya!!! Even though the former rapper has taken off his music gears and responding to God’s call to become a pastor, some of his songs remains to be a huge inspiration to many of us. This song is called “Sika Mpo Nfa Neho” and it features Nana Fynn.

In an interview with Nana Fynn sometime ago, he did say this collaboration was not planned and it just happened. To be honest this is one of the best from Lord Kenya and one of the best hiplife song ever released. Its song I wish could become popular again and choking the airwaves…

This song always gets me emotional when I listen to it. Its a song that gives the average person hope and inspiration to work hard to achieve their goals the right way. Unlike the songs we hear now that tells you getting money and “blowing” it is more important. I understand why older people are no more into our “modern” songs… The message in this song is still valid and clear. Download and share…

A moment of silence to a great talent…. R.I.P. Terry Bonchaka! Our throw back today goes out to an extraordinary and talented Afro-Ragga artist, who goes by the name Terry Bonchaka. Today’s throwback is titled “Zoozey” and it features legendary highlife artist; KK Fosu.

The “Zoozey” album was officially released after Terry Bonchaka died. The Zoozey album was released around December 2003 or early 2004 (Not too sure about the year). Terry Bonchaka’s fame shot up even higher after he died; with lots of young guys trying to dress and look like him.  “Zoozey” was the title track for the 10 track album which was released under the “The Bonchaka Project 2004” initiated by PSI Records, a subsidiary of Peter Smith International Investment Ltd along side many unreleased songs from Terry Bonchaka.

What Terry did back in the days was very rare. He was unique, different, creative and most of all, his songs had 100% African lyrics. He spoke more about African values, Love and Life from the Ghanaian perception, and almost everything that promotes our culture. We lost a great personality and I am not sure if anyone can replace him. Download and take yourself back into the days!

Once again, we are honouring a very special request from a loyal fan! Today’s throw back is a song by the group Praye (Not Existing Any More) called JACKET (remix) featuring 4×4, Wutah, Tinny, Samini and Blackson and was produced by the man of that era; JQ. I know you can all agree with me that, this is one of the biggest collaboration and also one of the most loved remixes of all time. The original song did not make so much impact like the remix. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember how the original even sounded like.

PRAYE released this song under “Broomx Entertainment” and that was their “Cocoa” season. After winning a competition organized by Nescafe dubbed “Nescafe Revelation” Azorpete, Big J and Kente rose to fame at a very high speed. Other hit songs they had were Shordy, Angelina, Wodin and many others that were making endless rotations on our TVs and Radios. It’s unfortunate things had to fall apart and see these talented young men chasing different dreams now. The group PRAYE does not exist any more but songs they made will forever be the same. Look what I Found!!! This talented young man who goes by the name Ebo and also the younger brother of entertainment Icon; Kwabena Anokyi Adisi a.k.a. Bola Ray, climbed the fame ladder so fast with this single titled “Once, Twice” featuring Dre featured on Appietus’ compilation somewhere around 2006. (not sure of the year) We all fell in love with this song and it became one of the most requested songs around that time.

Ebo how ever had some doubts about his career even though Ghanaians accepted him fully. He was sceptical about the gradual change coming into the music scene; and that was everyone going fully local in regards to language. He thought his English content wont be able to make a good impact… Even though he said he is inspired by artists like Rocky Dawuni and few others, he had the dream of flying out of the country before doing more music. I dont know where he is now and I dont know what he is up. BUT I still got this awesome song to share with with you! Its a throw back challeeeee!!!

Dr Cryme — Kill Me Shy (Audio + Video) Throwback Music

Once upon a time, the whole Ghana was singing to this awesome piece! Dr Cryme released this song some few years ago and it got everyone singing to it! “Kill Me Shy” is a direct translation from the Akan language which is supposed to have something to do with too much love for someone. I wont make sense if I try to explain this into details… LOL

I can say this song was Dr. Cryme’s most popular song. He called his style Twi Pop which I believe is another branch of Hiplife but got more singing and melodious rap involved. I am not sure there was a single soul who disliked this song. Fellas sang this song for the one they really love!

If there is or was someone who did not like this song, then that person might have a personal problem with Dr Cryme. These are some of the beautiful songs we had some few years back. This was the era when we had Our HipLife Manners! Enjoy this and relax with it.

I guess HipLife had some fixing to do few years ago, but was ignored and now its almost invisible… I was listening to this song which I believe is from Obour’s “Fontomfrom” album, titled “The Game” featuring Okyeame Kwame and Richie.

This song addressed very vital issues in the HipLife scene and I think if more attention was paid to these issues, HipLife may have a very strong stand than it has now. I was quite young when this song was released; so I did not pay more attention to the lyrics and what it meant.

But as time went on and I got to understand how HipLife was not supported by most artists and other big names in the industry, I got more insight about the inside issue more than a song that we simply danced to at parties and other fun events. Songs like this needs a calm environment and deep thinking. They saw it happening but were they able to save HipLife? Lets go back into time challe…

Its time to take you back to another powerful hiplife throwback!! This music is from Obrafour called “Obibini” featuring Mensa of FOKN Bois fame. The song is from Obrafour’s “Asem Sebe” album released over a decade ago. When Hiplife gets very real, people tend to call it HipHop and this is one of those songs.

Obrafour and Mensa spoke about mental slavery, unity and preserving our rich culture as Africans. I don’t remember the actual year this album was released but I am very sure it was between 2000 and 2001 because I bought the cassette when I was going back to school after vacation at that time. It was worth taking part of my pocket money to buy the album.  I still love this song! Enjoy!

Today’s throwback is one of my favourite gospel songs by Obrafour! He calls this this one “Mensesa Da” (I never change). I dont know what it is with this song, but it does make you get emotional and got a way of bringing memories back. This song is from Obrafour’s “TOFA” album which I think was his 4th Album.

Obrafour talked about how situations may change but he will never change no matter how life may treat him; rich or poor… Songs like this got no expiration date and they will always sound good and new no matter what! Listen to a masterpiece done by a living legend!

First of all, we must apologize for not being consistent with our ThrowBack Thursday posts. We have been working on a schedule of songs to post every Thursday starting probably from Next month. This is because we want to make sure we are not violating copyright laws by giving some of the songs out for free download.

Those that can be downloaded for free are the ones we are currently putting together. Meanwhile we decided to post one song from KK Fosu which was actually a request made on Twitter. This is called ‘Number One’ featuring D-Flex. This song was a big hit and one of the best songs coming from KK Fosu a.k.a. the D Styler!

This song is from KK Fosu’s album titled “6  O’Clock”. The music video still look modern to me and feels like it was shot just few weeks or months ago. All I’m trying to say is; KK Fosu was ahead of time and his songs can still be relevant if a little push is given to them. For now, Enjoy this old skool video and wait for more throwbacks coming soon!

Today’s throwback music is from the retired rap legend known as Lord Kenya and it’s titled ‘Enwom No’ off his “Ye Sum Sika” album.

‘Enwom No’ which means that song is one of Lord Kenya’s greatest record of all time. I can’t recall who produced this excellent piece; but I suspect it might be Zapp Mallet. Hiplife music without Lord Kenya would have been impossible because, he brought diversity and style which has made his name remain the book of Hiplife even though he has hanged his boots and working for God as pastor.

This music talked about his lyrical prowess and it was well demonstrated in the song. This song brings a lot of smiles on my face listening to the instrumentals and the production. That unique sound! The sound of original and authentic hiplife! This is what it means when they say Hiplife is a combination of Hiphop and Hiplife. Excellent production and it’ll never go down the music drains.
